Chapter 1: Goodbye, New York

“But you promised you’d never say goodbye to me”, Blaine said and was almost begging. “That’s what I thought too”, Kurt said coldly. “But that was before you let me down.” Kurt tried to hold his tears back. He was unable to believe that he was leaving. Kurt remembered how his hand had been shaking as he had signed the divorcing papers. It had hurt so much, but there wasn’t anything else he could’ve done. “Come on Elisabeth, our flight is leaving soon”, Kurt said and grabbed a young girl by the hand and left crying Blaine behind.

Elisabeth Deangela Hummel was a 16 years old girl. She was an adoptive daughter of Blaine Anderson and Kurt Hummel. Her parents had successful careers- Blaine as a singer/songwriter and Kurt on Broadway. Elisabeth was popular in her school, and had been a cheerleader until she had faced something that had changed it. They had been a happy family. But one day it all changed. Kurt found out that Blaine had cheated on him and wasn’t able to forgive him. Kurt had gotten the custody of Elisabeth and had decided that they’d move to Lima- a place, where he could forget Blaine. Elisabeth didn’t want to leave New York, but she understood that Kurt needed time. And besides, she was mad at Blaine, for letting Kurt and her down like that. Elisabeth cried a little as she looked out of the window of the airplane.

Blaine Anderson and messed the things up badly. He had made a huge mistake and Kurt had left with Elisabeth. Blaine regretted that he had cheated on Kurt, but what was done, could not be undone. Though if he could turn back the time, he would’ve just gone home to Kurt and not done what he had done. Now Blaine was lying alone on the couch in the silence that was slowly killing him. Nothing, not even singing, could make him feel better. And at the moment moving on felt impossible.

Elisabeth couldn’t help but smile when she saw Burt and Carole, her grandparents, on the airport waiting for her and Kurt. Burt smiled, but Elisabeth knew that he was angry at Blaine at the moment. “Are you both okay?” Carole asked looking concerned. “No”, Kurt replied and then changed the subject: “Is Finn coming to visit tonight?” Burt nodded. “Yeah. He is pretty pissed off, so it’d be better if you didn’t mention that Anderson”, he said. Elisabeth looked down.. Burt didn’t call Blaine by his first name, which meant he hated him. “But let’s go home now.”

Finn stormed through the door into the living room where Kurt and Elisabeth were watching the television. Well, neither of them was really watching it. “Good to see you two!” Finn said with a smile. Kurt didn’t say anything and Elisabeth barely even looked at Finn. “It really brought you down, didn’t it?” the tall man asked and sighed. “What would you think?” Kurt asked. “I was happy those weeks ago, before that guy called and I found out about Blaine and him.” Elisabeth wanted to say that had been happy too, but then Quinn, Finn’s wife, stepped into the room. “I’m sorry about what happened. Must’ve been very hard. since you even left Broadway”, she said. Kurt didn’t say anything. “…Could we please change the subject?” Elisabeth asked as she had noticed that her adoptive father had gotten uncomfortable. Quinn smiled and sat on the couch next to Elisabeth. “Have you thought of taking up cheerleading now that you’re here?” Elisabeth shook her head. “No. I can’t, Quinn.” The blond haired woman took her hand and said: “But you’re very good. And I wouldn’t put you on the top of the pyramid.” Quinn was the coach of Cheerios in McKinley High School. “Okay. I will think of it”, Elisabeth promised. Then Carole came into the room. “We need to cheer up a little! Elisabeth, could you please sing us a song?” she asked. Elisabeth nodded and walked over to the piano and sat on the little bench. She started playing it. “Used to dream of being a millionaire, without a care. But If I’m seeing my dreams and you aren’t there ‘cause it’s over, that just won’t be fair…”, she sang. ”Darling, rather be a poor woman living on the street, no food to eat. ‘Cause I don’t want no pie if I have to cry. ‘Cause it’s over when you said goodbye.” Quinn was singing along quietly and Burt had come to listen. “All at once, I had it all. But it doesn’t mean anything now that you’re gone. From above, seems I had it all. But it doesn’t mean anything since you’re gone…” Elisabeth smiled for a moment. Singing Alicia Keys’ song always made her feel better. “I know I pushed you away, what can I do that would save our love? Take these material things, they don’t mean anything. It’s you that I want.” Rachel Berry had taught her to sing this song and she was super thankful. “All at once, I had it all. But it doesn’t mean anything now that you’re gone. From above, seems I had it all. But it doesn’t mean anything since you’re gone.” Elisabeth stopped singing and everyone clapped and even Kurt was smiling. Suddenly Elisabeth was feeling a lot better. And maybe tomorrow, her first day in WMHS wouldn’t be so bad after all.
